Winter is setting in and with Christmas right around the corner it should be the most wonderful time of year. However the unfortunate reality is that burglaries are more common than ever during the dark, winter months. To avoid becoming the victim of a break-in and having your Christmas ruined there are a few simple ways in which you can ensure your home is secure.

Check Your Locks

You should check that all of your door locks are insurance-approved. I.e. make sure wooden doors with night latches (Yale type) have the British standard kite mark on them. If you have a dead lock it should have code 3621/2007 and a kite mark.

UPVC doors should have snap safe and anti drill locks fitted. Medium security locks will have the code BS1303 whereas high security locks will have the code TS007, each containing the British standard kite mark.

If you’re unsure whether the doors to your property adhere to these security standards just contact Secure Locksmiths, your local Cheltenham Locksmith, and we’ll be more then happy to advise you.

Make Your Home Less Appealing to Burglars

As well as ensuring your locks provide a good level of security there are other measures you can take to help decrease the chance of experiencing a burglary this winter.

Christmas presents and other valuables should be kept out of sight from windows to avoid prying eyes spotting anything that may appeal to them. Thieves also don’t like being seen so external lights illuminating your garden and any side entrances during the night will act as a strong deterrent. And finally make sure all doors and windows are locked at all times. It seems obvious but it can be an easy thing to forget, especially at this busy time of the year.

Merry Christmas to all of my customers past, present and future! Have a great Christmas and stay safe.
